Live, Work and Play Together Effectively

Your marriage, family, church, business and other organizations are teams.  Forming, storming, norming, and performing are the basic stages of teamwork.  Researchers estimate that 80% of teams lack the skill to make it past storming.  That means 80% of marriages, families, churches, businesses and other groups lack the skill to live, work and play together effectively.

What is storming?  Storming is that stage when people are tired of following the leader without question.  Members of the group start voicing their own ideas about what the group should be doing, how the group should be doing it, and what their role(s) should be.  Most individuals lack the basic interpersonal conflict resolution skills to find solutions to all these disagreements.  Thus, the stage is called storming.  Most groups get stuck in storming and/or revert back to forming, where the group depends heavily on the leader.  If a group stuck in storming/forming feels unsuccessful, the group thinks it is time to get rid of the current leader and get a new leader.  Does this describe many of the marriages, families, churches and businesses with which you are familiar?

There is a better way.  It is possible for marriages, families, churches, businesses and other groups to learn skills that enable them to move past storming into the effective functioning of norming and performing.
